Proper Prep Prevents Pathetic Paint jobs!
What is needed to prep your project so that you have the best results with our Rattle Bomb products? It depends on the substrate you want to shoot them over! Take a look at these common substrates:
Bare Metal: Rattle Bomb products CANNOT be applied over bare metal. Bare metal must be coated with a Self Etching Primer (solvent Based, urethane Grade). It is then recommended that the surface is coated with a High Build Primer to protect the following basecoat from the self etching primer, which contains a small amount of acid in it.
Primed Surface: Apply your Basecoat over a solvent based, urethane grade primer. AVOID hardware store products like Rustoleum and Krylon. These products are meant to be used within their own product ecosystem. Spray at your own risk. We have recommended SEM Primers since the beginning as well as our own Heavy Build Primer.
Original Color (Basecoat & Clearcoat): New OEM finishes that are in very good shape can be coated with our Basecoats and other products assuming that they are cleaned, scuffed with an ultrafine (800 grit) scuff pad and cleaned again prior to painting.
Plastic / Fiberglass: These surfaces need to be cleaned, scuffed and then coated with an Adhesion Promoter before a primer/sealer is applied. Here is an exhaustive video on proper plastic prep. The key things would be:
- Cleaning
- Scuffing
- Adhesion Promoter
